Jesus Was Not God But the Word of God

Jesus is given many titles in the Qur'an like the Sprit of God, the Messiah and the Word of God (Kalimatullah) that indicate his uniqueness among other Messengers of God. [1] Both the Gospel and the Qur’an identify Jesus as the Word of God, but each of them represents different theological approaches. The Christians identify Jesus as God, based on the principle of Trinity. But the Holy Qur’an’s identification, unlike the Gospel, does not preclude or overshadow Jesus’ function as a human, a messenger of God and the son of Mary. Some commentators believe that “the Word” refers to the tidings Mary received from her Lord through a miraculous conception in her womb, or it is an allusion to the Divine Creative command “Be” (Kon) by which Christ was formed in Mary’s womb. In another reflection, “the Word” means that while the other creatures are brought into existence through God’s Word, Christ alone obtained such a title to be the Word of God. [2] Based on another reflection, Jesus was a means through which God’s Word was manifested in the world. [3]
